The Outhouse

Good Morning,

Just setting here watching the snowflakes fly. The fields are mostly planted, and the sound of crop dusters has been silenced today. Quite cold too. We are only getting a dustin', the rest of the state is covered with snow, several places are reporting a foot of snow.  Made me think of days gone by...good days.

My Dad was the pastor of a little mountain church at Cove Creek, the church sat next to the creek it was named for, and the low water bridge would cause you to have a prayer meeting before you ever arrived at the church, if it had rained. The old saying, "I'll be there if the creek don't rise", was a true life experience!
In Winter, we would huddle around the potbelly stove, and pity the poor soul that couldn't 'hold it'! The trips to the outhouse were never pleasant, but worse by far in the winter! Females had to learn to stand, and remove as little of necessities as possible, in order to take care of nature and not freeze! Because, if you failed to maintain your stance, you worried more than about frostbite, while your backside was stuck to the toilet seat! ( Oh, we were 1st class, we put a real toilet seat on our wooden stools!), course you didn't really want to call for help due to the delicate nature of our position! Don't even get me started on the spiders, and other critters that took up residences inside those little buildings! Skunks tended to want to raise their little ones inside these shacks...

When Dad left that church, to pastor the little Indian Mission church in Oklahoma, we were really moving up in the world! We had two potbellied stoves there, and until we remodeled, there were the 'infamous' outhouses, but we had two-holers, Oh yes, two women could take care of nature, and cut down on the line, see.  One of the stoves was up front and one in the back of the church, you either sat in the 'Amen Section', or the 'backsliders roost'!  Honestly, you just sat at which stove gave out the most heat, some days the stoves were cranky and wouldn't work properly.  Mom and Dad would always get to church early enough to take off the chill from the sanctuary, course that meant for us, it was a cold wait, but we stayed busy.  Us children had dreams of stardom, we were gonna be in a singing group, we'd get up there and sing, and play (well, made noise anyhow) on the old piano, drums, anything we could get our hands on. We wanted to make sure we got in enough practice. I remember several days when my Dad would say, "Children, you've got that song down just as good as your going too."  Nope, we never gave up, see we had an Aunt and Uncle whose family had a singing group, they had made a record, and we were walking in tall cotton...cause they were 'kinfolks!' That was big time! You couldn't climb any higher than that, you had arrived! They could sing, and what anointing, my aunt was also a songwriter, the best, and when they would come hold our churches concerts, not only was it great services...but visiting time! We love them dearly, and have shared many wonderful memories through the years with them.
Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter we were in church. When the doors were open, you went. No questions, sick or otherwise, it was church time. Church was first, because God was first, and God always blessed us in return. I do remember a few scary moments in these trips back and forth to church. Poor Mom and Dad, how many times would we drive to church, up and down those ice and snow covered mountains! Dad would drive down one mountain, make it to the top of another, and get out and gauge how bad the next mountain was. I can still see mother, sitting bundled with the baby on her lap, her pretty hair done up in curls, worry furrows on her face, cautioning Dad to be careful. And us children bundled till only our eyes and long hair were visible, of course, now mind you, with seven children there was also constant comments and advice from our knowledgeable heads! My mother would mention on occasion that "Silence is Golden!" hmmmm, wonder what she meant? Part of the time he would drive with one wheel in grass (for traction) and the other one on solid ice on the road. God was mighty good to us! She would not be happy to hear I had told this, so let's just keep it between us shall we? Once, I remember Mom said, "Herbert, (that was Dad) just let me and the children get out and walk!" and she meant it. You can go pretty fast, without even trying to, down those mountain roads in the winter!

Mom and Dad had seven children to raise, feed, clothe, and care for, the little churches didn't pay enough to support all those mouths, so Dad needed a second job, and with all us children roaming around, they thought it best if we roam on farmland rather than streets.  I remember the the winters of milking, Dad bringing the milkers and lines in the house to sit by the stove, so he could milk the next morning...frozen lines were worthless, and the cows had to be milked! I can see him huddling over the electric heater, trying to warm his hands in between milk cycles...so the poor cows wouldn't jump out of their skins when his cold hands put the milkers on them. He'd bundle up and take a thermos of coffee to the milk barn. In real bad weather, it took both Mom and Dad working over there in the mornings and evenings both, usually mornings she was making breakfast, and ensuring that we managed to get to the school bus on time. We always made better time to catch the bus if there was snow on the ground, we'd do a little sledding down the hill!  I will never forget how we had to haul water when the house lines would freeze, I sure hated it. We carried big buckets of water back and forth from the barn...up and down 2 steep hills, crossed the creek and arrived with clothes frozen stiff, from where it had splashed on us, lids always got knocked off, and the big buckets would only be half full of water, after the slipping and sliding trip we took to get from the house to the barn! Good days...hard days...but good.

My little chicks are comfortable...sitting in the LR, stove and heat lamp keeping them steady at 90* (this is their 2nd week!!)
The liquid poo, has eased. Thank God! We are so pleased to see those little chicks, hear their chirping and watch them grow. It is a comforting sound, and one that the whole family has taken an interest in! We've begun to call the parsonage "The Rev.'s Farm!" Who knew this city boy of mine would love the country as much as I?

Also placed a picture of one of the crop dusters over the church.

Waiting...waiting...

I have found out, with certainity, that I am not really a patient person, no, this is becoming quite apparent with my attitude on these little eggs!barnie We have ALL been watching, listening, & waiting...

Wednesday is the due date..I'm not really 'wishing' my days away... but I've checked the clock, the calendar, and the clock again...multiple times... pop

This week-end was a difficult one.  Nay, you could say stressful, anxiety laiden, even high-blood pressure week-end!  How on earth do people manage to get in such fixes?
My husband recieved a phone call from a person who does not attend our church, but knew us,  they were frantic, police were questioning this person, and now....well what a mess.  While my husband presence is calming, and comforting...the seed has been sown. May God have mercy.
What a blessing and peace people will have when they serve the Lord, we preach it, teach it, live it...and still... well, this is not heaven, so we will keep working till then!

Is the flu afflicting anyone else?  The Rev. spent yesterday between church services, visiting people sick with the flu. We always get the shots...(my daughter & son have lung difficulties) we try to protect them as much as we can. We've been told this one is not working, though they say it helps you if get the flu, but will not prevent.
Oh yes, it's a lovely day today....supposed to get up to 65!  And the sun is shining....
I am making better time now that I don't have to use a boat to get back and forth between the church and parsonage!....lol (It gets pretty deep over the sidewalk....) actually it might be a good idea!  he he he
My husband did offer me his waders when I was complaining duc (I mean 'commenting') the other day about it!  It ruins my shoes!  I have to tiptoe and it still rises up to my ankles!! (If it wasn't so cold, I would just take my shoes off and go across barefoot!) rant
But I know, the sun will shine, the puddles will dry up, and we will not wash away. wee

A Cold Night in the Church Van

Feb. 23 - Today is the last day I turn my eggs...now, I just watch the temps, & keep it humid inside.
I heard a scratching noise... small, but several! So excited! There is life within those tiny shells!! Course they do say, Don't count your chickens before they hatch....
Thirteen eggs! jumpy jumpy jumpy
Would love 13 baby chicks!

Last night was our youth rally. We had to cancel the rally in January because of ice. We were unable to attend the banquet in Dec.(the church van broke down on the way...there were 11 people, and it was cold.. got back home about 11:30 that night...note* we had left at 5:05) though I must add, after several hours we knew we weren't going to make it...so we didn't go hungry! Lot's of cookies, and pumpkin bread, and small slivers of ham were passed around. For drinks we sufficed with the ones we had brought, the poor Rev. never took a bite the entire night.
The children had blankets, and we all had coats, so though it was a long night, we sure had a good time visiting! Of course, the Rev. had a new dress shirt on, he was under the hood, under the van, (front & back) for different reasons, is anyone else aware of the fact that every single square inch of space under the hood is covered with oil? My poor dear, there he was, in charge of all the people, in the middle of nowhere, late evening (that means everything is closed) knowing the outside weather was turning colder by the minute. He has very large shoulders, and they were certainly full at that moment, but when people begin to pray, God moves in mighty ways! A young man, (who happened to be a nephew of one of the folks on board the van) stopped by, assisted, and several hours later, the van was in motion! Praise the Lord!  Toes had lost feelings, fingers as well, smoke billowed from our mouths every time we spoke, and noses were quite red, the bathroom issue occurred, (with my children of course)...let's just say, "Thankful for darkness and bushes!"
I'm so very grateful to be part of our church family, they bore it without complaint, laughter and encouragement were the only words they sounded in his ears! What soldiers they are!  Why, even Rolling Romeo, never complained that he missed his dates, yes, that's plural on purpose! Have I introduced Rolling Romeo? No? Well, our Saints of the congregation deserve their privacy, so nicknames have been made to suit them....and suit them they do! Why Romeo might be better called Casanova! The stories I will share with you about that sly fox!

Today is a "home" day for us...We didn't hardly know what to do with ourselves today! (my 'honey-do' is pretty long...lol) Sure would be nice to get a few items marked off! That coop is still waiting on us!! The Rev. has his hands full with his work, I'm not much of a carpenter (ok, so I'm NOT a carpenter), so it must wait till he is able to build....they that wait upon they Lord shall renew their strength!
Hoping for little chicks from eggs...
I'm not going to tarry. I'm going to enjoy time with my husband and children....

pt. 5

I'm not really sure about the dimensions of the coop...he's told me several times...I retained that info really well...NOT! roll I know that I walk so far this way, and can reach so far that way. Isn't that all that matters?
The weather is still so cold; coats gloves & mittens must be worn to brave the outdoors, but it's for a good cause...the breakfast table! ;-)

I don't think I mentioned last weeks service it was wonderful! A young woman came in and was saved...then this Saturday, yes in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, she experienced a miracle...I can't post it here...but it was a miracle! yippiechickie

I wonder if every mother thinks her children are the brightest, smartest, most beautiful/handsome on the planet? Mine are. My son decided he was going to sing in the choir this week-end...and took a mic and sang his little heart out...he did great! The children are learning to play the drums, piano, and I would like to pass on my limited knowledge of the banjo to them...I just have to purchase a banjo! fl
My hand is doing much better, I'm hoping to get back to playing the piano soon. My daughter is quick to pick up the notes on the piano...

Anyway we are all excited about the chickens...we have some church members who are watching this progress with extreme interest!

Well as I said in the first line...church night...and I have no clothes ironed...
And I've got to work up the courage to candle my eggs... jumpy

The Adventure Begins...

January was an uneventful month, besides one, my cast came off at the end of it. Now I wear a brace, hoping to be free from restraints soon.

January 31st bought little giant, still air, non-egg turner, incubator for $50 at Feed Store.
Feb 1st, plugged in and awaiting eggs...
Feb 2 nd, searching, searching, searching- for the correct temp.
Feb 6th, eggs arrived (24)
@ 5:00 pm I placed them in the incubator.
Now, I'm waiting, turning, checking, waiting, turning, checking....

Why did I want chickens? I'm a farmer at heart...I also thought to save money & make a little money....eggs in our pantry, and supply church members with FRESH eggs! yippiechickie

The Coop...well, it's a skeleton at this time...a very thin skeleton. My husbands schedule is extremely binding, and the thought of a power tool, well it makes me weak...I see images of blood, lost members of my body lying on the ground...whew..enough.
And of course, I still can't do much with my hand; it is frustrating.

Yes, today is Saturday the 9th...my husband is at a seminary class. As he will be every month till May on the second Saturdays. Then of course, Angel food is the first and third Saturdays...and then we hope...we get the fourth Saturday!!
We don't have him through the week anyway, rent houses are always calling...he's repairing 3 to get ready to rent...they are waiting and that is money...soooo,(saying silently to myself " don't fuss, don't fuss, don't fuss..)

Today the church women have gathered to clean and decorate the fellowship hall for tonight's Valentines Banquet. I see 2 cars over there as I type...which means I must go, wouldn't want them to think the pastors wife was lazy or trying to out of working...

You know, I grew up on a farm, fed and handled the chickens, but I never incubated....what fun we missed! Mom just left them with the broody hens...I know that's best...but I'm having fun here. Well, when I'm not frustrated!

As a note to add, my little chickens
are to be little Silkies...

I bid you farewell for this day!
